Documentary Backyard Family Session with Horses & The Sharp Family in Akron, Ohio

I believe that every family has a narrative – a tapestry of moments woven together to form the fabric of their journey.

And this story…begins on a property that Mom grew up on and remembers coming to throughout her childhood.

Maddy (Mom) and I first met when she came to my studio for a one on one mentoring session. I loved her instantly and we bonded over her desire and passion to leave her full time job for entrepreneurship. Fast forward a few years, and a few family sessions with her crew later, and we arranged a last minute late fall family session. The chosen location: her cousin’s property with their two horses, a place she grew up going and spending her time as a young girl.

I was instantly all about the idea, because anything meaningful (and def anything involving farm animals) is my jam right now. Creating an overarching narrative, and coming full circle from childhood to adulthood and coming here as a girl to bringing her own children, that was the story I wanted to encapsulate here.

Why? Because these are the images that will become treasured heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation, serving as a timeless reminder of the bond of a family coming together in a unique and meaningful location. While some of our past sessions together were slightly more traditional, in the field, at the beach, we wanted to take not just a meaningful but more unique approach. More candid, blurred images. Artistic and creative. Movement, grain, and a little wee bit of a filmy vibe.

With all that said…if we want to be honest (and I’m nothing but, if you know me!) the kids were cold, not crazy about the horses in their face half the session, and nothing went off without a hitch. So, while my writing and storytelling has romanticized the experience, Mom, Dad, and myself will tell you it was anything but a smooth and flawless session. And I only share that because…I want you to know that beautiful moments can be created even when everything doesn’t go according to plan.

And that is kind of also my jam. Make the best of whatever kids throw at us, keeping things moving, and finding the moments in the madness.

If that sounds like the experience you want - then a documentary styled family shoot is for you.
